Steve Herbert was raised in Glenroy and has lived in the north-eastern suburbs for most of his life. Steve decided to follow his enthusiasm for education and in 1977 qualified as a teacher and taught at schools in the northern suburbs. Steve’s interest in politics, both Australian and international, enticed him to become a member of the ALP, in 1983. Later he embarked on a career in the political field, working in senior advisory roles with both state and federal governments, beginning in 1990. He worked alongside Lynne Kosky when she was the Minister for Education, providing him with first hand experience dealing with the intricacies of government, bureaucracy and effective service delivery. Steve was the Chair of the Parliamentary Education and Training Committee between 2002-2006, which undertakes substantial investigations into ways of improving education outcomes for young people. Following the Bracks Government's re-election in November 2006, Steve was appointed Parliamentary Secretary for the Environment. In August 2007, Steve was appointed Parliamentary Secretary for Education, assisting the Minister for Education, the Hon. Bronwyn Pike. Steve has
represented the Eltham District since December 2002, and in that time has strived to make
Eltham a better place for the whole of the community. He is particularly active
in helping improve local schools, sports facilities and working to develop
greater community involvement amongst residents. |
