As the global financial
crisis continues to hamper economic growth and prosperity around the world,
governments in many countries are looking for ways to help keep the economy
stimulated during this downturn.
Recently the Rudd
Government announced a $10.4 billion package to help alleviate financial
pressure on households over the Christmas period.
On top of this $10.4
billion package, recent reports have suggested the Rudd Government is
considering a $600 million infrastructure fund directed at local level.
The purpose of this
package, so it’s reported, is to finance small scale local projects that are
able to begin very quickly. Some examples of these include upgrading local
roads, building or upgrading bridges, sports grounds and libraries.
I think this would be a
terrific initiative, bolstering local economies while helping to keep local
people in work as the country toughs out the global financial crisis.
I have recently written to
the Prime Minister expressing my support for such a fund and included a number
of local projects that could be quickly undertaken and be of real value to the
local community.
What do you think about
this plan? What local projects do you think would be of value to the community
and could be started almost immediately with a small injection of funds?
